Wards

To many people local government structures can be confusing. This simple explanation of Wards will hopefully answer your questions.

Local authorities across the country break areas down into wards. As the spatial units used to elect local government councillors, wards are the key building block of UK administrative geography. Wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, landmarks, or geographical features. Wards themselves are made up of several Polling Districts which are created in order to make the wards more administratively manageable.

The full council comprises 60 elected members (councillors) representing 20 wards, with the election of councillors held every four years (the next one will be in May 2010). Following the May 2006 elections the council consists of two political groups. The Wandsworth Conservatives Group has 51 members; the Labour Group has 9 members, with control of the council being held by the Conservative group.

There are 20 wards in Wandsworth with 3 councillors each to address the needs of the local residents in a feasible manner.
