New Northcote Post Office
Following the closure of the Northcote Road branch last summer the nearest facilities are in Lavender Hill, Alfriston Road and St John’s Hill – all of them a considerable distance from Northcote Road. Local post offices do more than provide a friendly and accessible service for their customers; they can often also help to attract other shops to a local parade. As a result of the concerns raised by Northcote residents and businesses in response to the closure of their local branch, Cllrs Peter Dawson, Philip Beddows and Martin Johnson have been working towards the return of a Post Office facility for local residents, and immediately wrote to the Post Office Ltd.
Having received a reply in December 2006 from Valerie Stanley of the Post Office’s National Consultation Team affirming that it remained the Post Office’s intention to maintain a facility in the Northcote Road area, the Northcote Councillors turned to the local Somerfield to see if it would consider opening a Post Office franchise in store as a way of resolving the issue.
Somerfield responded very positively to the idea and agreed to look into the matter, indicating that a resolution to the problem was around the corner. However, the Post Office is not willing to consider such a proposal, despite all their previous assurances about resuming services to the Northcote Road area.
Whilst this is a setback to the campaign, lcoal Councillors are continuing to challenge the Post Office on your behalf, and have recently written another letter expressing the frustration and anger that they share with the local community over this development, and urging the Post Office Ltd to reconsider this decision.
Since 2003 there have been 13 Post Office closures in Wandsworth. Across the country the Royal Mail estimates a loss of 10,000 branches. Now there are significant fears that more could close as part of a "restructuring" process which could mean barely a handful of our remaining 30 branches will be left in Wandsworth after 2010.
